These glands are located within the mouth: the smallest are the sublingual glands which, as the name suggests, are positioned beneath the tongue; the glands responsible for the greatest saliva production (70%) are the submandibular glands, located at the base of the tongue and at the back of the jaw. Finally, the parotid glands \u2014 the largest in terms of volume \u2014 produce approximately 25% of total saliva and are located within the cheeks. The secretion they produce, being of a liquid consistency, is composed of 99% water. The remaining 1% comprises various substances, including mineral salts, proteins and glycoproteins, immunoglobulins, and enzymes.    <\/p>\n<p>Together, these components work in synergy to carry out the many functions of saliva. But <strong>what exactly does saliva do?<\/strong> Here are its main roles:  <\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Protection for the Mouth and Teeth:<\/em><\/strong> thanks to its content of minerals and especially bicarbonate, saliva acts as a natural antacid, reducing the buildup of bacterial plaque on the teeth and thereby lowering the risk of cavities. More broadly, it helps create an environment unfavorable to the growth of microorganisms on the mucosa, contributing to the protection of overall health. <\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Swallowing and Digestion:<\/em><\/strong> as the saying goes, digestion begins in the mouth, thanks to the enzymes present in saliva. The combined action of chewing and saliva forms the food bolus, making it easier to swallow. The natural ageing process \u2014 with its tendency towards reduced fluid intake and diminished salivary gland function \u2014 can also lead to this condition.
