5 Ideas for Healthy and Fun Eating

Teaching our children healthy eating habits is a key step in laying the foundation for a strong, healthy body. But as we know, health starts in the mouth too: a balanced diet, rich in wholesome foods, is essential to keep both our teeth and our kids’ teeth strong and healthy.

Limiting sweets, candies, and sugary fizzy drinks, while favoring fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, is a great starting point for a smile-friendly diet… but what do you do when your little ones are crazy about the very foods they should avoid?

Enforcing strict rules at mealtime can easily turn eating into a battle: adults stress over negotiating every bite of broccoli or carrot, while kids clench their jaws and refuse to cooperate, throwing tantrums or even staging a full-blown hunger strike.

Does it really have to be this way? Fortunately, no!
Here are some practical tips to turn mealtime into an enjoyable experience for everyone – from us parents, teaching good habits, to our children, learning to take care of their health starting with their oral health.

Take It Step by Step

Switching overnight from burgers and ice cream to large plates of salad and fresh fruit can be… quite a shock! For this reason, it can be helpful to proceed gradually, without eliminating the staples of indulgent eating altogether. For example, pizza is loved by all kids, and there’s no need to take it off the menu. By adding a vegetable topping, we can introduce this valuable food easily. In the same way, although limiting carbohydrate consumption is recommended for maintaining healthy teeth, we should not banish pasta altogether: instead, opt for the wholegrain variety.

To achieve the goal of encouraging children to eat healthily, we can start with the pantry: make all those foods that we know to be beneficial for oral health a regular fixture, and avoid filling the fridge with carbonated drinks and assorted sweets. In this way, a healthy diet will not be an abrupt imposition, but simply part of everyday life.

Make Healthy Eating Fun!

Turn mealtime into a playful experience. When the youngest children are still getting to grips with “grown-up” food, we can let them play with what is on their plate, using their hands to explore tastes and textures. Providing them with colourful plates rich in vegetables — perhaps arranged in fun shapes, such as smiley faces or little animals — will spark their curiosity and make these foods synonymous with an enjoyable moment. The fussiness will soon diminish!
Another idea is to create “mini” versions of healthy foods: a small spinach-rich quiche in a muffin tin, for example, can entice children to take that first bite.

Eat Together as a Family

Mealtimes should be a shared, enjoyable moment for the whole family. In this way, on one hand we turn mealtimes into an enjoyable occasion: imagine inviting some of your children’s friends over — for them it will be a celebration. On the other hand, it allows us to lead by example, showing how even adults can be perfectly happy eating healthy foods that are also good for their teeth. And then, after the meal — everyone off to brush their teeth!

Cook Together

Involving children in meal preparation can help them feel more comfortable with healthy foods. So yes to involvement at every stage of the process: from the grocery shop, where we can ask for their opinion on which vegetables to put on the table, to the preparation of the meal itself, assigning small tasks based on their age. And then, if time and space allow, why not set up a small vegetable garden to tend together? A couple of pots for growing strawberries or cherry tomatoes will be all it takes — and a wonderful incentive to enjoy them together at the table!

No Pressure

The path towards a healthy diet can be long and challenging. The important thing is not to give up — but equally not to force the issue: being too insistent, and perhaps understandably losing patience, can have the opposite effect. If our children refuse to eat a specific type of vegetable, let us consider that it may simply come down to personal taste. Let us try something different, or experiment with new recipes.
The temptation to ban certain foods from the table entirely can be strong. However, this is not always a good idea: nothing makes something more appealing than an absolute prohibition! Reducing the consumption of sweet snacks, for example, is extremely important; let us try replacing them with fruit-based snacks, while still allowing for the occasional special occasion where giving in to a slice of cake is perfectly fine. Ideally as a dessert after a meal, so as to take advantage of the greater saliva production and its important buffering action against oral acidity — which increases with sugar consumption and is responsible for dental fragility and cavities.

The presence of food residues in the oral cavity — particularly those rich in the sugars that bacteria thrive on — causes a drop in pH which, as it becomes increasingly acidic, leads to demineralisation, dental erosion, and ultimately cavities. For this reason, careful oral hygiene is essential: it is advisable not to brush immediately after eating, as this facilitates the action of the acidic components of food and damages the enamel. In the early years of childhood, when young ones attend nursery or kindergarten, nutrition in the school environment is more closely supervised and largely in the hands of teachers. However, the situation changes considerably as schooling progresses. From primary and middle school onwards, children often bring a snack from home to stave off hunger mid-morning. The simplest solution — particularly for busy families juggling a multitude of work and logistical commitments — is to slip a packaged snack into the school bag. This situation becomes even more entrenched in the secondary school years, where vending machines dispensing snacks and beverages are frequently available. Healthy alternatives are rarely among the options offered by these machines, meaning that as they grow older, students are continuously exposed to sweets, chocolate bars, and sugary carbonated drinks.

By now we adults should know this well — and it is essential to pass this knowledge on to our children: all these sugars are harmful! The entire body suffers, but the oral cavity is the first “victim” of this unbalanced diet. The harmful bacteria that live in our mouths thrive on sugars. Consuming too many not only promotes the proliferation of the bacteria responsible for cavities and gum infections, but also causes — as a result of the metabolic activity of these microorganisms — an increase in oral acidity, with consequent damage to tooth enamel, making teeth even weaker and more susceptible to decay. A true vicious cycle!

That’s why the role of parents starts at home, when packing the school bag for the next day. If we want to prevent our children from consuming harmful foods and drinks, we must set a good example and provide healthy alternatives – fresh fruit, for instance, is a great place to start.

Food isn’t the only challenge when it comes to protecting children’s teeth. Brushing at school after meals isn’t always easy: younger kids in preschool often don’t have the chance to use a toothbrush and toothpaste, while older students may simply not have enough time to take care of their oral hygiene during the school day.

For everyone, the starting point is setting a good example at home. As parents, it is our responsibility to establish the habit of tooth brushing, adapting the approach to the age of the children. Younger ones, for example, can be encouraged to turn tooth brushing into a fixed daily routine. And if they cannot bring a toothbrush and toothpaste to school, we can place in their school bag a product that replicates their function; for this purpose, sprays based on natural ingredients are ideal — they lubricate the oral cavity, mimic the action of saliva, and reduce oral acidity.

The term pH has become increasingly common in our everyday vocabulary, but few people know its origin. pH refers to a scale used to measure acidity and was introduced in the early 1900s by the chemist Søren Sørensen. The term comes from the German “Potenz Hydrogen”, meaning the power of hydrogen.

The pH scale ranges from 0 (very acidic) to 14 (very alkaline). For example, pure water has a pH of 7.07, while most fruits are generally acidic. The stomach environment is also highly acidic, ranging from 1 to 1.6.

Overly acidic environments often promote bacterial growth, which is why it is important to understand the pH of the foods we eat and take steps to counteract their effects.

 
There are various types of acids: citric acid in citrus fruits like lemons, malic and benzoic acids in plums, berries, and apples, and tannic acid in coffee, tea, unripe fruits, and red wine (in these cases, only excessive amounts can cause imbalances in the body).

These acids, along with the fruits and vegetables that contain them, are not harmful when consumed in moderation. It is important to balance them with alkaline foods, such as vegetables and dairy products, and to maintain proper oral hygiene to protect tooth enamel.

Carbonated drinks have always been a favorite among kids. It’s easy to see why: they’re refreshing, sweet, and the perfect companion to a pizza with friends or a burger at a fast-food restaurant after a night at the movies.

The average Italian consumes over 52 litres of carbonated beverages per year, with a predominance among the younger segments of the population. Such widespread consumption makes it very clear how the damage caused by this type of drink can affect us all — but children and adolescents in particular.

The link between the consumption of carbonated beverages and damage to the overall health of the body has been well established for many years: they can in fact contribute to the development of chronic conditions such as diabetes and obesity.
However, their impact on oral health should not be overlooked.

But why are these drinks so harmful to our teeth, and why is the effect even more pronounced for young teeth?

How Much Sugar Is in a Can of Coke?

First and foremost, these are products that contain very high levels of sugar. A can of cola, for example, contains more than 35 grams of sugar — the equivalent of seven sugar cubes. The bacteria responsible for tooth decay thrive on it, and the result of their metabolic processing of these substances is the production of acid, which attacks and weakens the teeth by corroding the enamel.

You might think that “light” or sugar-free versions of kids’ favorite drinks are safer – but that’s not the case. These beverages are naturally acidic even without sugar.. Over 90% of soft drinks have a pH below 4.0. When the oral pH drops below 4.0, acid begins to dissolve the tooth’s surface structure in an irreversible process called dental erosion.

The acid attack lasts for about 40 minutes after each sip – the time it takes for healthy saliva, rich in bicarbonate, to restore the mouth’s natural pH.

Since soft drinks are often consumed in large quantities (think of the giant cups sold at cinemas or fast-food restaurants), this exposure can last even longer, putting teeth at prolonged risk.

If this is dangerous for adults, it’s even more so for children and teens. Their enamel is not fully developed yet, making their teeth more susceptible to acid attacks. That’s why kids often have higher rates of cavities and dental erosion than adults.

The great news is that fizzy drinks are not a necessary part of a child’s diet. In fact, they can – and should – be eliminated entirely without any problem.

Healthy Alternatives to Sugary Drinks

As is often the case, teaching good oral hygiene and healthy eating habits is the best way to keep a bright, healthy smile. How can we encourage kids to cut back on fizzy and sugary drinks?

We know that proper hydration is essential for overall health—but not all drinks are equal! Beverages containing caffeine, like cola and other popular soft drinks, can even have the opposite effect, accelerating dehydration. Another good reason to limit them!

The first rule for protecting children’s oral health is to keep fizzy drink consumption to a minimum, favoring water or age-appropriate herbal infusions to avoid sugars and acids that can damage enamel.

Straws: A Simple Trick

Sometimes it’s okay to make an exception – after all, making fizzy drinks completely off-limits can make them even more tempting!

If we allow a small treat, it’s best to limit it to one glass, ideally during meals, when saliva production is higher and can help protect teeth.

Using a straw can provide an unexpected benefit: it keeps the liquid away from the teeth, reducing contact with sugars and acids and lowering the risk of damage.

Fizzy Drinks and Oral Hygiene: Your Best Allies

As always, reducing the time teeth are exposed to acidic and sugary beverages, and brushing immediately after consuming them, is the best practice. When this is not possible, we can teach our children to use natural bicarbonate-based sprays capable of immediately rebalancing oral pH — or, if these are not available either, to rinse the mouth thoroughly with water.

In this way the acids will be diluted and the water will help wash sugars away from the teeth, preventing the bacteria present from feasting on them. As soon as possible, however, it is always better to reach for a toothbrush and the sprays we have discussed, which perform a similar function in removing any sugary residues that may lead to the onset of cavities.

Since every sip of a carbonated beverage alters the oral environment for several minutes, it is advisable not to linger too long over the drink. In this way, the contact between the acidic substance and the teeth will not be prolonged, reducing the risk of dental erosion.

Finally, carbonated beverages should never be consumed just before going to sleep. During the night, saliva production naturally decreases and for many hours we do not brush our teeth: an acidic environment therefore develops within the oral cavity that is harmful to teeth and gums. If our children drink fizzy orange or cola before bedtime, the potential damage will be even more pronounced.

Watch Out for Energy Drinks

During training sessions, it is common practice to consume large quantities of energy drinks. If this habit is unhealthy for adults, it is even more so for children: these drinks, although rich in electrolytes, contain high levels of sugars — the primary enemies of oral health.

Energy drinks, being extremely sweet and often brightly coloured, can be particularly appealing to children. Unfortunately, these products very frequently have an acidic pH, meaning that when consumed regularly, the teeth are exposed for extended periods to acidic conditions that cause permanent damage to the enamel.

Micro-Lesions in the Mouth

Even during sports that appear relatively harmless for dental health, our young athletes may engage in habits that are less than ideal. How many times have we seen them open a snack wrapper with their teeth because their hands were occupied or too sweaty? Even this can create small lesions that, over time, may lead to more serious damage.

And while seeing our little champions on the podium is always thrilling… biting the gold medal isn’t exactly great for their teeth!

Stress and Bruxism

Another aspect that should never be overlooked is stress. Sporting activity — especially when it involves competition — is exciting for our children, but also for those of us who watch and have invested so much in their athletic development. This can translate into involuntary competitive pressure, leading younger children to manifest stress in ways that are harmful to the oral cavity, such as bruxism.

So, how can we make sure that sports benefit our children’s health – teeth and gums included? Here are three tips to keep their smiles bright:

1. Pay Attention to Nutrition

A healthy and balanced diet not only helps keep our body in shape, but is also fundamental for the dental health of our children. Carbohydrates are the best source of energy for physical activity, but complex carbohydrates are always preferable to simple sugars.

While it is important to balance fluid loss during physical activity, it is equally important to teach our children that water is the best source of hydration. Energy drinks can be useful in replenishing electrolytes lost through perspiration; however, due to their high sugar content and elevated acidity, they should be consumed in moderation — reserved for particularly intense training sessions lasting at least 60 to 90 minutes.

2. Champion-Level Oral Hygiene

Brushing teeth is always important, but even more so for children engaged in physical activity. Their mouths are more vulnerable to harmful bacteria that can cause cavities, gum disease, enamel erosion, and other issues.

Every time food or beverages are consumed, oral pH is altered and the body activates its Buffer System to restore balance. Saliva plays a very important role in the health of the oral cavity. It is a fluid rich in enzymes, electrolytes, and many other chemical compounds, produced by the salivary glands located in the mouth. Saliva also contains mucus, which serves to keep the oral mucosa lubricated.

Under normal conditions, saliva has a pH value of approximately 6 to 7, making it a neutral solution. Saliva contains bicarbonate — a critically important substance for its “buffering” role, through which oral pH is restored to neutral levels after meals. This process takes approximately forty minutes. However, if the pH of the mouth is not regulated and drops into the acidic range, this may serve as an early warning signal. This situation can occur, for example, when insufficient saliva is produced, as in the case of Xerostomia, or dry mouth.

If the pH falls below 5.5, it reaches the tolerance threshold of tooth enamel. At this point, the enamel can no longer withstand the acidity and begins to break down and demineralize. If this condition persists, it can become a serious oral health emergency, putting teeth at significant risk and potentially requiring urgent dental care.

Acidity is not only a threat to teeth. Soft tissues, such as gums and oral mucosa, can also be affected by an unfavorable pH. An acidic oral environment creates the perfect breeding ground for harmful microorganisms, which can lead to conditions like tooth decay or oral thrush. Conversely, a neutral environment helps prevent their growth. This is why maintaining the proper pH is so important.

Fortunately, oral acidity is usually easy to detect and can be managed with a few simple precautions.

But what causes the mouth to become more acidic? What effects does this pH change have on the oral cavity? And how can this condition be identified and treated?

Acidic Oral Environment: Causes

One of the most common causes — and fortunately one of the easiest to address — is diet. The consumption of acidic foods can rapidly alter oral pH. Some examples? Carbonated beverages (which, in addition to being acidic, contain high levels of simple sugars harmful to oral health), certain fruits such as citrus, and alcoholic drinks such as white wine are just some of the foods that can cause an imbalance in oral pH.

But there’s more. The mouth is home to a rich and diverse bacterial flora, normally kept under control by our immune system and, importantly, by proper oral hygiene. However, a diet high in sugar – especially simple sugars – can tip the balance. Oral bacteria feed on carbohydrates like sugars and, in the process, produce acidic byproducts (such as butyric, lactic, and aspartic acids). Frequent consumption of sweets, for instance, provides a feast for these microorganisms, which can lower the pH of the mouth.

Age can also play a role in pH imbalance. Young children and older adults naturally produce less saliva, making these age groups more susceptible to oral infections, such as oral thrush.

Symptoms and Health Risks of an Acidic Oral Environment

One of the first signs of an altered oral pH is bad breath, or halitosis. This indicates an overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the mouth, which may sometimes appear as a coating on the tongue.

If oral acidity persists for an extended period, or if pH levels are particularly low — and therefore highly acidic — tooth enamel may begin to deteriorate. The first symptom we often encounter is dental sensitivity, to both cold and heat. What does this mean? The enamel has become thin and demineralised, and in some areas has worn away entirely, leaving the tooth without its primary protective barrier.

The next step — painful and familiar to many — is tooth decay. The tooth has become vulnerable to bacteria , developing lesions that can grow if not treated promptly and may become increasingly troublesome, with potentially serious consequences such as tooth loss or the formation of an abscess.

Acidity is synonymous with microbial growth. The gums and oral mucosa can therefore fall prey to bacteria or fungi, such as Candida albicans, which thrive in a low-pH environment.

How to Restore Saliva to an Optimal pH?

Under normal conditions, following the peak of acidity around mealtimes, saliva is capable of spontaneously restoring neutral pH within approximately forty minutes. The first fundamental step in promoting the correct oral pH is oral hygiene. Brushing after every meal — without neglecting dental floss — removes food residues that could facilitate bacterial proliferation, supporting saliva in its buffering role.
